Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected the idea of a ceasefire without security guarantees, warning it would not bring lasting peace and could be broken by Russia. His comments came after European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, proposed a one-month truce covering air, sea, and energy infrastructure attacks. However, UK Minister for the Armed Forces Luke Pollard did not confirm Britain’s endorsement of the plan.
In a tense White House meeting, U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticized Zelenskyy for not accepting proposed truce terms, while Zelenskyy insisted on security guarantees. The meeting ended without an agreement on sharing Ukrainian mineral rights, and some U.S. Republicans suggested Zelenskyy should step down. Zelenskyy later stated he would consider resigning if Ukraine were granted NATO membership.
Meanwhile, Russia has questioned Zelenskyy’s legitimacy, citing Ukraine’s postponed 2024 election due to martial law. European Union leaders will meet on March 6 to discuss further support for Ukraine and European defense needs.
