Work begins in Gaza to restore power to water supply facility

On Tuesday, the electricity company in the Gaza Strip began reconnecting power to enhance a desalination plant’s capacity, confirmed by an Israeli official to Xinhua. This initiative, coordinated with Israel, aims to supply electricity from Israel to a major desalination facility in Khan Younis, despite ongoing conflict since Hamas’ attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

Video footage showed workers from the Palestinian Electric Company repairing power lines damaged during Israel’s nine-month offensive in Gaza. This plan, initially approved by Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on June 16, is set to boost water supply to Deir al-Balah, Khan Younis, and Mawasi, aiding Gazans who sought refuge from the attacks.

Since the onset of the war, Gaza’s health authorities report over 37,900 casualties due to Israeli attacks. The extensive damage has led the International Court of Justice to suggest a “plausible risk of genocide,” a claim Israel denies. The offensive, according to Israel, aims to dismantle Hamas following their attack last October, which resulted in around 1,200 Israeli deaths and 250 hostages taken.
