The World Health Organization (WHO) approved its first emergency use diagnostic test for mpox, developed by Abbott Laboratories. The test, called the Alinity m MPXV assay, uses PCR technology to detect mpox from human skin lesion swabs and is meant for use by trained clinical staff. WHO assistant director-general Yukiko Nakatani highlighted the test’s importance in expanding access to diagnostics in outbreak regions. The WHO is reviewing additional mpox tests and working with manufacturers to increase availability. Mpox was declared a global public health emergency in August after outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo spread to neighboring countries.
