Aviation analysts are investigating Sunday’s Jeju Air crash in South Korea, which killed 179 of the 181 onboard. Contributing factors under review include a bird strike, landing gear malfunction, pilot error, and a concrete structure near the runway.
The Boeing 737-800 attempted to land at Muan International Airport after reporting a bird strike. The pilots issued a Mayday before the plane made a belly landing, skidded off the runway, and exploded upon impact. Only two crew members survived.
Investigations are focusing on the landing gear failure, excessive landing speed, and the role of a concrete embankment at the runway’s end. South Korea has ordered emergency safety inspections for all Boeing 737-800 aircraft and the country’s airline operations.
