Volcanic activity rises on Greece’s Santorini

Greek officials are monitoring increased volcanic activity in Santorini’s caldera, though scientists say there is no immediate cause for concern. Sensors detected mild seismic-volcanic activity, similar to what occurred in 2011 without incident.

The Hellenic Volcanic Arc has shown increased activity, but experts stress that major eruptions happen roughly every 20,000 years, with the last significant one around 1620 BC. Santorini remains an active volcano, though its last eruption was in 1950. Authorities are holding meetings to assess the situation.
