Uncertain future of ESA and global wildlife protection

The Endangered Species Act (ESA), enacted in 1973, has protected species like the California condor and bald eagle. In 2019, the Trump administration revised the ESA, allowing economic factors to influence species protection and easing habitat restrictions for development. Critics, including conservation groups, argued these changes weakened protections and endangered species affected by climate change.

The Biden administration later restored protections, basing decisions solely on scientific evidence and prioritizing ecological needs for critical habitats. However, challenges remain, including funding limitations and disputes over habitat designations, leaving the future of the ESA uncertain.
