The UN warns that increasingly severe floods and droughts signal the unpredictability of the planet’s water cycle due to climate change. In 2022, global rivers experienced their driest conditions in over 30 years, glaciers saw unprecedented ice loss, and many floods occurred. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) highlights that human-induced climate change, along with natural phenomena like El Niño, worsens these extremes. Water shortages affect billions, and glaciers continue to melt at alarming rates. The WMO calls for urgent action to curb greenhouse emissions and better monitor global water resources to reduce damage and improve water security.
