Delegates from 175 countries met in South Korea for the final U.N. talks on a global treaty to tackle plastic pollution before the December 1 deadline. Committee chair Luis Vayas Valdivieso presented a draft document proposing measures like managing plastic products and funding for developing countries. However, the document faced criticism for lacking firm targets on reducing plastic production, addressing harmful chemicals, and ensuring health protections.
Disagreements persisted, with some nations pushing for mandatory reduction targets while others, including petrochemical producers like Saudi Arabia, opposed such caps, favoring recycling and waste reduction instead. Frustrations grew over slow progress and unresolved key issues.
