U.S. regulators have finalized rules for “powered lift” vehicles, enabling the use of air taxis. These aircraft combine features of both airplanes and helicopters, allowing for vertical takeoff and horizontal flight. The new rules address gaps in existing regulations and create the first new civilian aircraft category since the 1940s. The regulations cover pilot qualifications and safety standards and could benefit startups in the electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) sector. Companies like Hyundai’s Supernal aim to launch air taxi services by 2028, and German startup Volocopter seeks certification by year-end.
