U.S. newspapers sue OpenAI, Microsoft for copyright infringement

A group of eight U.S. newspapers, including the New York Daily News and the Chicago Tribune, has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging that the companies have been using millions of copyrighted news articles without permission to train their AI chatbots. The lawsuit, filed in a New York federal court, accuses the companies of “purloining” copyrighted content to build their businesses. The newspapers, owned by Alden Global Capital, argue that this practice undermines their investment in gathering and reporting news. While Microsoft declined to comment, OpenAI stated that it supports news organizations and is open to constructive partnerships. This lawsuit adds to existing copyright disputes between the companies and media outlets, highlighting ongoing tensions over the use of copyrighted material to train AI systems.
