A U.S. federal judge has imposed a gag order on former President Donald Trump in his criminal case related to efforts to undermine the 2020 presidential election. The order prevents Trump from personally targeting prosecutors, court staff, and potential witnesses involved in the case. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan emphasized that while First Amendment protections are important, they must yield to the administration of justice and witness protection. The judge’s decision followed a hearing where she questioned a Trump lawyer about recent social media posts attacking Special Counsel Jack Smith. The U.S. Justice Department had requested limitations on Trump’s disparaging and intimidating remarks about the case. Trump’s attempt to postpone the trial was also rejected, with the trial scheduled for March 2024 in Washington.
