Thai police say cyanide killed 6 foreigners in Bangkok hotel, including suspect

Cyanide poisoning likely caused the deaths of six foreigners, including the suspected killer, found in a Bangkok hotel, Thai police said on Wednesday. The deadly chemical was detected on drinking glasses and a teapot in the Grand Hyatt Erawan hotel room. Interviews with relatives revealed a debt-related dispute over an investment.

The deceased, all of Vietnamese ethnicity, included two U.S. nationals. The U.S. FBI assisted in the investigation. Police Commander Trirong Phiwpan confirmed cyanide was found in the teacups and that one of the six introduced the poison. Autopsy results are expected soon.

Vietnam’s government and the U.S. State Department are monitoring the situation, with Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin ordering a swift investigation. The bodies were discovered after a call from hotel staff, and all were supposed to check out on July 16.
