Sydney’s bid to join the World Marathon Majors received a significant boost as the 2024 marathon reached its capacity of 24,000 runners, making it the largest field ever for the event in Australia. The marathon, originating from the 2000 Olympic Games, is undergoing an appraisal process to potentially join the ranks of prestigious races like Tokyo, Boston, London, and others from 2025. Race director Wayne Larden expressed excitement, aiming to deliver a world-class event and attract both local and international participants. Despite this milestone, Sydney still trails behind more established races in terms of interest, with London Marathon receiving over 840,000 applications for its 2025 edition. This year’s Sydney Marathon, scheduled for September 15, will feature a new course.
