A suspect, identified as Jason J. Eaton, 48, has been arrested in connection with the shooting of three Palestinian college students in Burlington, Vermont. The victims, all aged 20, were walking near the University of Vermont when they were confronted by a white man with a handgun. Two of the victims were in stable condition, while the third suffered more serious injuries. The motive is unclear, but Burlington Police Chief Jon Murad suggested that the incident may have been a hate-motivated crime, especially as two of the victims were wearing Palestinian keffiyeh scarves. The shooting occurred amid a rise in anti-Islamic and antisemitic incidents in the U.S. related to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senator Bernie Sanders denounced the incident, calling for unequivocal condemnation of anti-Arab hate and Islamophobia in the country.
