Supreme Court immunity ruling sets ‘dangerous precedent,’ says Biden

U.S. President Joe Biden has expressed concern over a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity, warning that it sets a “dangerous precedent” that former President Donald Trump could exploit if re-elected. Biden stated that the decision implies there are effectively no limits on presidential actions, marking a significant shift in principle.

The Supreme Court’s ruling, delivered in a 6-3 decision authored by Chief Justice John Roberts, declared that Trump cannot be prosecuted for actions within his constitutional powers as president. This landmark decision recognized a form of presidential immunity from prosecution for the first time. The conservative justices were in the majority, while the three liberal justices dissented. This ruling overturned a lower court’s decision that had rejected Trump’s immunity claim related to federal criminal charges from his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Biden.
