The city council of Stockholm has expressed support for Sweden’s bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympic Games. In a statement, the council mentioned optimism about the potential games and an intention to decide on a municipal guarantee. If Sweden’s candidacy progresses in the International Olympic Committee’s selection process, Stockholm plans to be an active partner with the Swedish Olympic Committee. The IOC is set to decide on hosts for the 2030 and 2034 Winter Olympics in July 2024. The new selection process involves approval by around 100 IOC members rather than contested votes with rival candidates. Salt Lake City, USA, is considered a favorite for the 2034 Winter Games. The statement from Stockholm emphasized the potential benefits of hosting the Winter Olympics, including contributions to tourism, business promotion, job creation, community building, and inspiring youth involvement in sports. The mayor highlighted the commitment to organizing the event in a sustainable manner.
