South Korea grieves after 179 dies in it deadliest plane crash

A Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 crash-landed at Muan International Airport in South Korea on December 29, 2024, killing 179 of the 181 people on board. Two flight attendants survived with injuries. Officials suspect a bird strike caused the crash, which destroyed the plane and led to a fire after it skidded off the runway and hit a wall. Both black boxes have been recovered, and U.S. investigators are assisting with the probe.

South Korea declared a seven-day mourning period, and Jeju Air apologized publicly. The crash is the airline’s first fatal accident since its founding in 2005. Leaders worldwide have extended condolences.
