Joseph Schooling, Singapore’s sole Olympic gold medalist, announced his retirement from competitive swimming. In a Facebook post, he expressed gratitude for the experiences swimming brought into his life, citing victories as exhilarating and defeats as humbling, which forged resilience in him. Schooling gained fame as “Singapore’s Flying Fish” after winning the men’s 100-meter butterfly title at the 2016 Rio Olympics, beating notable swimmers like Michael Phelps. Though this victory was the pinnacle of his career, he didn’t achieve similar success thereafter, failing to qualify for the 2023 Asian Games. Despite this, Schooling is recognized as one of Singapore’s greatest athletes, boasting one Olympic gold, three Asian Games titles, and 29 Southeast Asian Games championships. While stepping away from competition, he expressed swimming would always be a part of him and looks forward to exploring new passions and challenges in the next phase of his life.
