Scientists have used satellite trackers to uncover the movements of young sea turtles during their early years, a period previously known as the “lost years.” Researchers tagged 114 turtles in the Gulf of Mexico, revealing that the hatchlings actively swim rather than just drifting with ocean currents. The study, published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, found that young turtles navigate between continental shelf waters and the open ocean. Advances in solar-powered GPS tags made the study possible, providing crucial insights into how endangered sea turtles use their habitats.
