Researchers unveil promising compound against COVID-19
Researchers from the University of Oulu in Finland, along with partners from the University of Kansas and McDaniel College in the United States, have created a compound, MDOLL-0229, which effectively hampers the replication of the COVID-19 virus. This discovery could mark a significant advancement in the fight against COVID-19 and potentially other coronaviruses. The compound specifically targets a part of the virus’s protein, hindering its ability to evade the body’s defense mechanisms and multiply in human cells. Led by Professor Lari Lehtio, the research team initiated this work early in the pandemic, aiming to develop compounds that can thwart the virus’s activity. While the compound shows promise, the journey toward a usable medication is lengthy and involves further development and clinical trials, which may span years. The findings were recently published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.
