Russia and India called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine crisis through diplomacy, as stated in a joint release following Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Moscow. Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized regional security, advocating for a UN ceasefire resolution and humanitarian aid in Gaza.
The leaders highlighted the stability of Russia-India ties amid geopolitical uncertainties and aimed to expand their strategic partnership. They outlined nine cooperation areas, including nuclear energy and medicine, with a goal to increase bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030.
Energy cooperation was a key focus, with discussions on new long-term contracts and increased Russian coal sales to India. The possibility of a free-trade agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union and India was also explored, alongside settling bilateral accounts in national currencies.
During the visit, Putin awarded Modi the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle and invited him to the upcoming BRICS Summit in Kazan. This was Modi’s first visit to Russia in five years.
