Chinese President Xi Jinping awarded Tajik President Emomali Rahmon the Friendship Medal of the People’s Republic of China in Dushanbe, marking the first time the award has been presented outside China. Xi’s visit follows a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Astana and a state visit to Kazakhstan.
Xi noted his strong working relationship and deep personal friendship with Rahmon, having met 15 times. In 2019, Xi received the Order of the Crown, Tajikistan’s highest decoration, from Rahmon, who praised Xi’s contributions to bilateral relations.
The two countries have strengthened ties and people-to-people exchanges. Gulbnur Rahmonova, head of the folk music department at Tajikistan’s state college of music arts, performed a solo guzheng piece during Xi’s 2019 visit, showcasing a Chinese zither gifted by China. The performance received prolonged applause, marking a unique cultural exchange.
In 2015, the Tajik college of music arts signed a cooperation agreement with China’s Lanzhou University of Arts and Science, enabling student exchanges. Additionally, the Confucius Institute at the Tajik National University, established in 2008, has trained nearly 39,000 Chinese language learners, reflecting a significant increase in Tajik students studying Chinese language and culture.
