Sri Lanka’s human-elephant conflict has led to 3,477 elephant and 1,190 human deaths from 2015 to 2024, according to Environment Minister Dammika Patabendi. The deaths increased significantly after 2020. Patabendi stated that the government plans to allocate funds to tackle the issue through measures like electric fences, reopening elephant corridors, and improving food availability in forests.
