OpenAI has introduced its new Voice Engine technology, capable of cloning a person’s voice with just 15 seconds of recording. However, due to safety concerns, the company has decided not to release it publicly yet. They plan to offer previews to early testers but withhold wider release, emphasizing the risks of misuse, especially during an election year. OpenAI aims to ensure that testers do not impersonate individuals without consent and disclose that the voices are AI-generated. Although some startups already offer similar technology, OpenAI’s move hints at its intention to enter the speech recognition and digital voice assistant market, potentially competing with products like Amazon’s Alexa.
