Meta Platforms released its latest AI model, Llama 3, on Tuesday. The model boasts 405 billion parameters, supporting eight languages, higher-quality code generation, and more complex math problem-solving capabilities. Though smaller than OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Amazon’s upcoming models, Llama 3 aims to rival these paid alternatives. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Llama 4 is in development, with both models available under an “acceptable use policy” to promote broader AI innovation.
Zuckerberg expects future Llama models to surpass competitors and anticipates the Meta AI chatbot will become the most popular AI assistant by the end of 2024. He emphasized the importance of open innovation for U.S. tech leadership, arguing against isolationist approaches and noting that even a small lead over China in AI development can be significantly advantageous.
Meta also updated its smaller Llama models, enhancing their multilingual capabilities and complex task handling. The improvements stemmed from user feedback, particularly on code generation, and the use of AI-generated data for training. Performance tests show Llama 3 competing well against top models like OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet, especially in benchmarks for math and multi-subject knowledge.
