Meta is testing facial recognition technology again, three years after halting it due to privacy concerns. The trial, launching globally in December, aims to tackle “celeb bait” scams on Facebook by enrolling 50,000 public figures. Their profile photos will be compared with images in suspected scam ads, and fraudulent ads will be blocked. Celebrities can opt out of the trial.
Meta is focusing on balancing scam prevention with privacy concerns, especially after facing legal issues related to biometric data. The trial will exclude regions like the EU, Britain, Texas, and Illinois, where regulatory clearance is lacking.
