Mark Carney has been elected leader of Canada’s ruling Liberal Party and will succeed Justin Trudeau as prime minister. Carney, a former central banker, won with 86% of the vote, defeating former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. His leadership comes at a challenging time, as Canada faces a trade war with the U.S. and an upcoming general election.
Carney, 59, has no prior political experience but was governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England. He argues that his expertise makes him the best candidate to handle trade negotiations with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has threatened tariffs on Canada. His campaign focused on economic growth and strong retaliation against U.S. trade policies.
Initially trailing in the polls, the Liberal Party has seen a resurgence, partly due to public opposition to Trump’s actions. Carney is expected to call an election soon, but polls suggest neither the Liberals nor the opposition Conservatives would win a majority. Though he does not currently hold a parliamentary seat, tradition suggests he should seek one quickly.
