Japanese health supplement maker Kobayashi Pharmaceutical is investigating 76 additional deaths potentially linked to its cholesterol-lowering tablets containing red yeast rice, known as “Benikoji.” The company has received 1,656 inquiries from individuals who sought medical attention, leading to the investigation of these cases for possible causal connections to the deaths. Previously, five deaths were officially linked to the supplement by Japan’s health ministry. The Osaka-based company has faced criticism for delaying public disclosure of the issues, which were known internally since January, with the first public announcement made only on March 22.
