Hamas’s deputy leader, Saleh al-Arouri, was killed in an Israeli drone strike on a Hamas office in Beirut’s southern suburb. Several of al-Arouri’s aides were also killed. Hamas condemned the attack as a violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty and froze ceasefire negotiations with Israel. Hezbollah called it a serious assault on Lebanon, while Israel, although not claiming responsibility, described it as a surgical strike against the Hamas leadership. The Lebanese Prime Minister condemned the attack, and Iran labeled it a “despicable” move. France urged Israel to avoid escalation, and the UN Secretary-General expressed deep concern, calling for maximum restraint to deescalate tensions in the region.
