Egypt announced a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, starting Sunday morning, under which Hamas will release 33 Israeli hostages in exchange for Israel freeing over 1,890 Palestinian prisoners during the first phase. Mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and the U.S., the agreement aims to ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and includes plans for reconstruction and a roadmap towards peace negotiations based on a two-state solution.
Egypt, along with its partners, will oversee the exchange, humanitarian aid delivery, and movement of people through the Rafah crossing. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that the ceasefire is temporary and that Israel retains the right to resume military operations if negotiations fail. The conflict, which began in October 2023, has resulted in over 46,000 Palestinian and 1,200 Israeli deaths.
