Salt Lake City has been awarded the 2034 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, marking its second time hosting the Games, the first being in 2002. The announcement was made following a vote by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Paris.
Around 1,000 fans gathered in downtown Salt Lake City at 3 a.m. local time to watch the announcement live, many dressed in ski gear or Team USA merchandise. The crowd cheered as the decision was made, reflecting the city’s ongoing enthusiasm for the Olympics.
Salt Lake City was the only candidate for 2034 after receiving exclusive negotiating rights last year. The city capitalized on low interest from other cities due to climate change and high costs. Organizers emphasized their preserved 2002 venues and readiness to host again.
Local leaders and organizers highlighted the city’s enthusiasm and preparedness throughout the selection process. Darrell Robinson of Herriman, Utah, celebrated the announcement with his daughter, recalling the excitement of the 2002 Games.
