Mount Marapi, one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, erupted on October 27, 2024, spewing thick ash clouds and covering nearby villages, but no casualties were reported. Known for unpredictable eruptions, the volcano sent ash as high as 2,000 meters and spread debris over several kilometers. The mountain has been on high alert since January, with restrictions in place within 3 kilometers of the crater.
Mount Marapi’s last major eruption in December 2023 killed 24 climbers, and recent monsoon rains caused deadly mudslides, killing 67. Residents remain cautious as the rainy season approaches. Indonesia frequently experiences volcanic activity due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire.”
