Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was released from detention on Saturday after prosecutors chose not to appeal a court’s decision approving his release. Yoon, arrested on January 15 and indicted on January 26 for allegedly leading an insurrection, became the first sitting South Korean president to be arrested and prosecuted. His legal team argued his detention was procedurally flawed, and the court ruled in his favor.
Upon release, Yoon greeted supporters outside the Seoul Detention Center and later at the presidential residence. Tens of thousands rallied both in support and opposition to him in Seoul. The Constitutional Court is expected to deliver its final impeachment verdict next week.
