Activist groups have sued Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, in a Berlin court for allegedly violating European law by withholding data needed to track disinformation ahead of Germany’s February 23 election. The Society for Civil Rights (GFF) and Democracy Reporting International (DRI) claim that under the EU’s Digital Services Act, X must provide access to data on post reach, likes, and shares, which other platforms have granted.
Concerns over online disinformation have risen in Europe, especially after allegations of Russian interference in Romania’s 2024 election. The urgency around X is heightened by Musk’s recent support for Germany’s far-right AfD party. Since acquiring Twitter, Musk has restricted free data access, making it a paid service. X has not responded to the lawsuit.
