Spain’s high court has found former football federation president Luis Rubiales guilty of sexual assault for kissing midfielder Jenni Hermoso without her consent. He was fined more than 10,000 euros and banned from approaching or communicating with Hermoso for one year. Rubiales denied the charge, claiming the kiss was consensual, and vowed to appeal the decision.
The case sparked national outrage, highlighting issues of sexism in women’s football and society, and adding momentum to Spain’s “Me Too” movement. Prosecutors had sought a prison sentence, but the court opted for a monetary penalty, citing that the assault was of minor intensity without violence or intimidation. Rubiales’ co-defendants, who were accused of coercing Hermoso into saying the kiss was consensual, were acquitted.
In addition to this case, Rubiales is under investigation for corruption related to a deal for staging the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia. Hermoso’s lawyer also plans to appeal the ruling.
