European leaders met in Paris to discuss increasing defense spending and Ukraine’s security but remained divided on deploying peacekeepers. The emergency talks, called by French President Emmanuel Macron, followed U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to engage in direct negotiations with Russia without consulting European allies or Ukraine.
While leaders agreed on a “peace through strength” approach, they stressed that a ceasefire without a peace deal would be risky. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer supported sending peacekeepers but insisted on a U.S. security commitment first. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed doubts about the plan, citing logistical and financial challenges. Some leaders, including Denmark’s Mette Frederiksen, supported increasing defense budgets.
The discussions highlighted growing European concerns about relying on the U.S. for security and the need to strengthen their own military capabilities.
