Apple could face substantial fines from the European Union after the EU antitrust regulator found that the App Store’s rules breach the bloc’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). The European Commission’s preliminary findings suggest that Apple’s App Store practices prevent app developers from directing consumers to alternative channels for offers and content, violating the DMA’s competition rules.
This charge marks the first application of the DMA, aimed at curbing the dominance of Big Tech and fostering fair competition for smaller companies. A final decision is anticipated by March next year. EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager highlighted concerns that Apple’s current terms restrict app developers’ ability to freely communicate and contract with end users.
The commission also criticized Apple’s fees for customer acquisition via the App Store, deeming them excessive. Apple has stated that it has made several changes to comply with the DMA following feedback from developers and the commission.
