The International Energy Agency (IEA) has reported that new emission reduction pledges made at COP28 are insufficient to meet global targets. While countries and companies at the climate summit have committed to enhancing renewables, energy efficiency, and reducing methane emissions, the IEA asserts that these efforts cover only three out of five key action areas. Even if these pledges are fully implemented by 2030, they would result in a reduction of global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions by four gigatons of CO2 equivalent, representing only 30% of the emissions gap needed to align with the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
