The U.N. initiative to monitor methane leaks has issued 1,200 alerts to governments and companies since last year, but only 1% resulted in action to fix major leaks, according to a report by the International Methane Emissions Observatory. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, contributes significantly to global warming. Despite pledges by 150 countries and 140 companies to reduce emissions, methane leaks from the oil and gas sector remain at record levels. U.N. officials urge governments and companies to act quickly, emphasizing that addressing leaks is both environmentally and financially beneficial.
