A Chinese research team has developed an AI tool called TIMES that predicts liver cancer recurrence with 82.2% accuracy, according to a study published in Nature. Liver cancer has a high postoperative recurrence rate of up to 70%, making prediction crucial.
Led by Sun Cheng from the University of Science and Technology of China, the team created TIMES to analyze the spatial distribution of immune cells in the tumor microenvironment. This is the first liver cancer recurrence prediction tool integrating spatial immune data.
Using AI-driven spatial analysis and advanced techniques like spatial transcriptomics and proteomics, the system was trained on 61 patient tissue samples. A free online version is available for global users to assess recurrence risk by uploading pathological images.
The researchers aim to improve personalized treatment and are collaborating with industry partners to standardize clinical applications.
