Former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to a temporary halt on strikes against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure during a 90-minute phone call, signaling potential steps toward a broader peace deal. The White House called this the first step in a “movement to peace,” aiming for a full ceasefire and geopolitical stability.
Putin ordered a 30-day pause on energy strikes but demanded that Western military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine cease. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed skepticism, welcoming peace efforts but rejecting any compromise that weakens Ukraine’s defense.
The two leaders also agreed to a prisoner exchange, with 175 captives from each side set to be swapped. Meanwhile, U.S.-led talks in Saudi Arabia and further diplomatic efforts in Moscow indicate ongoing negotiations, though Russia insists on security guarantees, including Ukraine’s neutrality and exclusion from NATO.
