China’s National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center, in collaboration with Ocean Press and cybersecurity firm 360 Digital Security, has launched OceanDS (Haihai Zhiyu), the world’s first marine-specific large language model. This AI system represents a major advancement in integrating artificial intelligence into oceanographic research and applications.
Unlike general AI models, OceanDS is uniquely designed for marine intelligence, excelling in generating content and answering specialized questions. Independent testing has shown that it outperforms the top three freely available general models by significant margins in accuracy on professional queries.
The model is built on an extensive ocean-centric database containing over 1.8 billion data tokens, including marine-related books, research papers, policy documents, and industry reports. Advanced metadata encryption ensures data security and compliance with intellectual property regulations.
With a focus on stability and accessibility, OceanDS provides a flexible platform for various users. After successful pilot programs in multiple institutions, researchers plan to expand its applications to natural resource management and other sectors, supporting China’s broader efforts to accelerate industrial transformation through specialized AI tools.
