China has reported a rise in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases since mid-December 2024, sparking concerns about a new virus. However, health officials have reassured the public that HMPV is a known respiratory illness, first identified in the early 2000s.
Experts emphasize that most HMPV cases are mild, with symptoms like cough, fever, and fatigue subsiding within a week. Severe cases, particularly in children, the elderly, or immunocompromised individuals, may require medical attention.
There is no specific treatment or vaccine for HMPV; supportive care and preventative measures, such as wearing masks and hand washing, are recommended.
