Britain’s King Charles sets out new Labor government’s economic and social agenda

King Charles outlined Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s legislative agenda on Wednesday, focusing on economic revival and addressing issues like housing shortages and the cost of living crisis. This state opening of parliament marked the first time in 14 years that the Labour Party is in office.

In the traditional ceremony, King Charles, wearing ceremonial robes and the Imperial State Crown, presented a legislative program drafted by the Labour government, which includes over 35 bills aimed at economic growth, housing construction, major infrastructure projects, and job creation.

“My government will govern in service to the country,” King Charles declared, emphasizing security, fairness, and opportunity.

Prime Minister Starmer, who secured a significant parliamentary majority, highlighted the challenge of improving public services with limited budgets. He stressed the need for “determined, patient work and serious solutions.”

The event also highlighted Britain’s shift from absolute monarchy to parliamentary democracy, featuring traditions like the Yeomen of the Guard’s cellar inspection. This follows Labour’s victory in the July 4 general election, providing Starmer a platform to set out his government’s priorities for the year.
