The batteries of walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah were found to contain the explosive compound PETN, making them difficult to detect, according to a Lebanese source. Hundreds of these devices exploded, following a similar incident involving thousands of pagers used by Hezbollah. The walkie-talkies were labeled “ICOM,” though the company said the models involved were outdated and likely counterfeit. Icom suggested that explosives were likely hidden in the detachable battery packs. Explosions also occurred even when the battery packs were separated from the devices. Authorities believe explosives were implanted in the devices months prior.
