Football Australia has confirmed that the Australian national women’s football team, the Matildas, will face China’s Steel Roses in friendly matches on May 31 at Adelaide Oval and on June 3 at Stadium Australia in Sydney. These matches will serve as send-off games for the Matildas ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Adelaide Oval, with a capacity of over 50,000 spectators, and Stadium Australia, which can accommodate over 80,000 fans, will host the respective matches. The Matildas secured their spot in the Olympics by defeating Uzbekistan 13-0 on aggregate in February.
This friendly against the reigning Asian Cup champions marks the first time the Matildas will play in Adelaide since 2019 and their first encounter with China since a 1-1 draw in Sydney in February 2020. The Matildas have consistently played in front of sell-out crowds, including during their run to the semifinals at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Steel Roses, China’s national women’s team, had been based in Adelaide for the 2023 World Cup, playing their final group stage match against England in front of a significant crowd at Hindmarsh Stadium.
