Amazon has discontinued a privacy feature for Alexa devices, requiring all voice interactions to be processed in the cloud to support its upcoming Alexa Plus AI upgrade. The removed “do not send voice recordings” setting was previously available on select U.S. devices, but users will now be switched to “Do not save recordings,” which deletes data after processing.
Amazon claims few customers used the feature, though critics argue it was poorly publicized. The change highlights tensions between AI development and privacy, with supporters citing the need for cloud-based processing while advocates warn of reduced data control. In contrast, China’s regulations mandate explicit consent and local storage options for smart assistants.
