Six former police officers in Mississippi were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 15 to 45 years for state charges related to the torture of two African American men, Eddie Parker and Michael Jenkins, in January 2023. The officers, who referred to themselves as the Goon Squad, assaulted the men without a warrant, handcuffing, kicking, waterboarding, and using Tasers on them. Hunter Elward, who conducted a mock execution by firing a gun into Jenkins’ mouth, received the longest sentence of 45 years. The other officers received sentences ranging from 15 to 25 years. Both victims spoke of the lasting physical and emotional trauma they endured. Prior to the federal charges, an investigation by The Associated Press linked some of the officers to other violent encounters with Black men, resulting in deaths and injuries. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is pushing for further investigation into these cases.
