Six individuals were arrested and another was fatally shot by police in Ecuador in connection with the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio. All suspects are Colombian nationals. The victim, a 59-year-old journalist and anti-corruption activist, was killed after a political rally in Quito. The Ecuadorian Interior Minister labeled the killing a “political crime of a terrorist nature,” while President Guillermo Lasso declared a two-month state of emergency and requested FBI assistance for the investigation. The incident draws parallels to the 2021 assassination of Haiti’s President Jovenel Moise, involving Colombian and Haitian-American perpetrators. Three days of national mourning were declared.
