Russian and U.S. officials concluded 12 hours of talks in Riyadh on Monday, focusing on a potential Black Sea ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. This followed nearly five hours of discussions between Ukraine and the U.S. on Sunday, which centered on energy infrastructure security.
A joint statement from the Russia-U.S. negotiations is expected on Tuesday, with White House sources hinting at a “positive announcement” soon. However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov clarified that no formal documents would be signed.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the discussions also covered territorial disputes, demarcation lines, and energy infrastructure ownership. While a full 30-day ceasefire proposal was rejected by Russia and Ukraine, both sides have agreed to a moratorium on attacking energy facilities.
The Black Sea truce is seen as a key step in restoring trust, as both Ukraine and Russia heavily depend on the region for trade and energy exports. The talks also aim to limit attacks on critical infrastructure, easing the economic and strategic pressures on both nations. Experts suggest that addressing these issues first could pave the way for broader negotiations on more contentious topics.
